HOME As people of the Catholic Christian faith we gather to enrich our relationship with God and one another by nurturing the link between intellectual and spiritual life, which our patron John Cardinal Newman embraced. We do so by celebrating Sacraments, engaging in service ministry, bearing witness to Christian teaching, and exploring our faith and diversity.
As noted in our mission, we understand and take great pride in our commitment to the Christian faith alongside our academic education and seize all opportunities available to inform our student and faculty community about social injustices that many of our local and worldwide neighbors struggle with.
On April 4th, 2008, the Catholic Newman Community at the University of Rochester, with support from many other university clubs, fraternities, sororities, as well as other organizations of which our members are a part, and who are also committed to the same high socialideals, will be hosting a charity soccer tournament. This tournament, the Newman Cup, intends to bring awareness to the plight of migrant workers in Western New York and also offer financial support. As members of our neighborhood communities, friends, and families, we believe this large, diverse, and migrant body of people are often ignored as a result of their citizenship, social and economic status. This athletic tournament and speaking engagement is a unique opportunity for all members of our campus community to extend our awareness, appreciation, and concern for the lives of these workers and their families in an affective way. We also believe that hosting this event on the University of Rochester campus will contribute to the formation of many future leaders and professionals of America .
Our second objective is to highlight the presence of a Catholic community on campus with the hope of demonstrating our commitment to the students and faculty of this university, as well as to the hospitality of all individuals in our midst, regardless of their race, ethnicity, country of origin, economic and social status, sexual orientation, or faith tradition.
As a transitory community itself, we encourage all members of the university to join with us and commit themselves in welcoming this wonderful opportunity to educate, assist and serve.
