The Fellowship of Catholic University Students, a group of people passionate about changing the world and helping you live a life of purpose is starting at the University of Rochester this academic year. FOCUS has been on college campuses across the country for over 20 years and now begins a new Chapter at Rochester and the Eastman School of Music.
FOCUS is a Catholic collegiate outreach whose mission is to share the hope and joy of the gospel with college and university students. Trained in Church teaching, prayer, sacred Scripture, evangelization and discipleship, FOCUS staff encounter students in friendship where they are, inviting them into a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and accompanying them as they pursue lives of virtue and excellence.
FOCUS staff will support all current Newman leadership teams including E-Board, Kairos Team, St. Sebastian Society Captains, Alternative Spring Break and many leaders, students and activities at Newman. Additionally, FOCUS staff create and lead Bible studies, outreach events, and one-on-one discipleship that inspire and build up students in the faith, sending them out to spread the good news and to live out the Great Commission: Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations (Mt. 28:19).
Pope Paul VI and John Paul II encouraged the Church to engage the world with the message of the Gospel with 'new methods, ardor and expression.' This is what the New Evangelization is all about. And it all starts with a simple yes. All Rochester and Eastman students are invited to continue to say ‘yes’ and grow in their relationship with Christ.
WINThrough authentic friendships that foster an encounter with Jesus Christ, Newman FOCUS staff draws people into a covenantal relationship with God. Newman FOCUS staff will go out to meet students wherever they may be on campus — at student events, on the fields, in the student union — so that we may invite those students to find the greater meaning of their lives and live their Catholic faith more deeply.
BUILD Once they have encountered others in friendship, they invite others to go deeper in faith. Here the formation of students through Bible studies and one-on-one discipleship provide opportunities which enhance that the hearts, minds and habits of joyful, disciplined followers of Jesus. We teach and encourage opportunities to pray with Scripture, to participate in the sacraments and to pursue lives of virtue and excellence so that they can become all that God is calling them to be.
SEND While Newman FOCUS staff walks alongside people as discipleship, they likewise invite them to imitate Jesus and to be Spirit-filled evangelists by going on to win, build and send others. Those who have been sent strive to live out lifelong mission wherever the Lord leads them, sharing the good news with their friends, families, communities, workplaces, and parishes across the nation.
