Alumni Spotlight: Taking the First Step: Alumni Give Initial Contribution to Fully Endow Newman Community

J. Nelson ’55 and Joan Dutcher Hoffman ‘55

During Meliora Weekend, the Newman Community welcomed many distinguished dignitaries, alumni, and guests to our Sunday Eucharist celebration. It was a wonderful occasion as the Newman Community honored outstanding alumni J. Nelson ’55 and Joan Dutcher Hoffman ’55 for their transformative support of Catholic life at the University of Rochester. It was a joyous celebration indeed as the Newman Community named the director’s position the J. Nelson ’55 and Joan Dutcher Hoffman ’55 Director of Catholic Newman Community Pastoral Care.  Those attending the celebration included Most Rev. Matthew Clark, D.D. (Bishop of Rochester), Rev. Peter Werhle ’85 (Archidiocese of Newark), and many friends from the Class of 1955. After the dedication, the Hoffmans commented, “This gift is only a first step to seek full funding of the Newman Community. Our gift is a call for others who are committed to the noble goal of uniting faith and reason and to change lives by supporting the Newman Community.”

Nels and Joan are Rochester natives who have been married for over 55 years. After a successful career in the aerospace industry and raising five wonderful children, Nels and Joan reside in Snowmass, Colorado and Palm Springs, California. Throughout their lives together, the Hoffman’s have been devoted to Catholic living, biblical justice, and unconditional love. Their visionary leadership has transformed the Newman Community into one of the best Catholic campus ministry sites in the country, and their planned gift is a first of many gifts needed to lay a foundation for a stronger Catholic presence at Rochester. The Hoffman’s legacy encourages others to support the continued spiritual enrichment of collegiate students. Nels continues to share his passion to create a more just world.
